Before we move on to our training, it’s important to review how to identify if a course will be effective. One of the main ways is to check that the training includes reinforcement of learning, as this leads to retention of knowledge, meaning you are more likely to use your new knowledge and skills following the course and therefore, effective.
Common types of reinforcement in training includes case studies (written, video or podcasts), examples, discussion points, quizzes, and pre or post coursework. All of these activities allow you to practice and embed what you learn through simulating experience, so when you come across a similar scenario at work, you immediately recognise what to do and have the confidence to apply the knowledge.
In recent months RICS has piloted a new format of online training which takes place in a virtual classroom, a live online training programme led by an industry expert and closely replicates the face to face learning experience, but with the convenience and cost savings of being delivered online. The course was structured to include multiple types of reinforcement:
• Pre - Online reading
• Case study assignment with individual trainer feedback
• Online polls and quizzes
• Online break out rooms to network and complete group work
This pilot was extremely successful and achieved a 95% overall rating by all the professionals who completed the course. The consensus was that the course included all the additional contextual learning that really embedded the learning for them, as well as more individual trainer feedback and opportunities to network and learn from other professionals.
