We have all seen examples of managers who do not perform well and the impact this has – whether this be in our own workplace or as customers of other businesses.

The first people to understand and react to poor management are the employees of the business. They can quickly become disenchanted and this ultimately has an adverse effect on the business – showing very clearly in the bottom line.

So how can you behave in a way that gains your employee’s trust and respect? Here are our top 10 behaviours:

  1. Have a clear idea of where the business is going – your people need to know that their livelihood is in safe hands and for this you need a strategy and a plan to progress.
  2. Be sincere and caring with people – they are people first and employees second. Sometimes events in their life will affect their performance and attendance; make some sensible allowance for this and the goodwill will be invaluable.
  3. Manage the business efficiently – nobody likes to be involved in a chaotic, inefficient workplace.
  4. Practice what you preach.
  5. Show appreciation for good work – quickly and, wherever possible, publicly.
  6. If you have cause to be critical, deliver the message privately and reasonably. Tackle the behaviour, not the person.
  7. Consult people about how to improve things – not only can their opinions deliver something valuable, they will appreciate the simple act of being asked.
  8. Trust them and they are more likely to repay you.
  9. If you have promised something, deliver it!
  10. Support them if they are being treated unreasonably by customers or suppliers.

These behaviours make a big difference to your people and will make your business run more smoothly and profitably.
