Slowly but surely Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become increasingly utilised across the construction industry within the United States. While in existence since the 1980s, only recently has there been a widespread embrace of the technology within the country
While there is no general mandate for the adoption of BIM in the United States, recent studies have revealed that the process is now integrated into the lifecycles of more and more construction projects. A 2014 McGraw Hill Construction Market Report revealed that BIM adoption by contractors in North America expanded from 17% in 2007 to more than 70% in 2012. Its dramatic rise in use over the past decade can be attributed to long overdue industry recognition of the benefits that it offers to the project management process and to building modeling in general. These include increased accuracy, shorter project lengths and reduced construction costs.
The increased adoption of BIM technology has not been confined to the U.S. market. Globally, according to an Allied Market Research titled, “World Building Information Modeling (BIM) Market -Opportunities and Forecasts, 2015-2022,” the BIM market is expected to generate $11.7 billion in revenue by 2022.
In response to growing demand from construction/engineering firms and individual construction professionals to learn and understand the value of BIM technology, RICS has developed an innovative 6-month distance learning Certificate Program in BIM Project Management. The course will enable users to manage the BIM process at each stage of their project lifecycles.
